Today’s Scripture Selection: Numbers 3:5-9
The LORD said to Moses, “Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him. They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle. They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle.”
As part of the ordering and organization of the tribes of Israel, the Levites had a special responsibility. It fell to them to do “the work of the tabernacle.” They were to be twenty-five years old before they began serving, and probably received five years of training before being admitted to full service at age thirty.
The community also received very clear instruction that only the priests and those appointed to service in the temple could approach God directly.
How different this now that Christ as high priest (and sacrifice) has been provided for us. Now there is no ritualistic separation.
This doesn’t mean we are treat our faith or religious devotion lightly but it does mean that we need no other intermediary.
God has opened the door wide; the curtain in the “holy of holies” has been torn apart and set aside.
Come to God in this New Year – openly, honestly, with gratitude – and commune.
